Union Street has had its rough patches but it's still where half the city ends up on a Saturday night, and there's something brilliant about the no-pretension energy of a Plymouth night out. You're as likely to end up chatting to a marine biologist as a squaddie, and everyone's friendly after a couple of pints.
Mutley Plain is student central - the University of Plymouth brings thousands of young people into the city and the area around campus is always buzzing. Royal William Yard has become this gorgeous converted dockyard area with restaurants and apartments that wouldn't look out of place in Bristol or London. Stonehouse is a properly diverse part of town with great food and interesting people. The whole city sits right on the coast which means summer dating in Plymouth is genuinely special - sunset drinks at the Hoe, beach walks, boat trips across to Cornwall.
